MANILA: At least five soldiers were killed in a shooting at a military base in the southern Philippines, including the shooter, the military said on Saturday.

A soldier ran amuck after 1 am on Saturday (1700 GMT on Friday), killing four soldiers at an army compound in Cagayan de Oro City, Major Francisco Garello, spokesman of the 4th Infantry Division, said in a statement.

The army said that the shooter then went to other rooms, where two soldiers grappled with and killed him. “We assure the general public that this is an isolated attack.”

Internal investigation underway into military camp attack

Another person was critically injured. The military said an internal investigation has begun to identify the cause and gaps in the recruitment and training process.

Shootings are sporadic in Philippine. In June last year, three people, including a former mayor, were killed in a graduation day shooting in Manila.
