Former England Cricketer Panesar Steps Down as UK Parliamentary Candidate

LONDON: Ex-England cricketer Monty Panesar has withdrawn as an election candidate for the fringe Workers Party of Britain, just a week following announcing he was contesting for UK parliament.

The 42-year-old, sportsman initially expressed a desire to advocate for the working class and combat wealth disparity in the UK. He garnered admiration for his unique presence on the cricket field, sporting a distinctive black patka during his Test career from 2006 to 2013.

Originally aiming to contest in Ealing Southall, a stronghold of the Labour party, Panesar announced on X platform: Today, I’m stepping back from the General Elections for The Workers Party. Recognizing the need for further introspection, education, and alignment of my political beliefs, I seek a political home that resonates with my principles”.

He further said that he extended his best wishes to The Workers Party, and expected to utilize the time to refine his political stance and be fully prepared for future engagements in the political arena.
