In the world of sports, individuals who possess a deep passion for athletic endeavours and who, through their extensive experience, strive to propel the development of sports often earn swift recognition and acclaim. Husain Al Musallam is one such exceptional leaders who has distinguished himself as the impetus behind numerous accomplishments in a remarkably short period of time. In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where I had the pleasure of first meeting him, his unwavering dedication to advancing sports in Asia was clearly evident.

During our interaction, I questioned why there seemed to be a lack of Asian leaders within international federations, despite the abundant potential and sponsorship opportunities available for organizing Asian and world sports competitions. In response, Husain Al Musallam smiled and confidently affirmed that we indeed had the capability to produce such leaders. True to his words, he went on to secure the presidency of the World Swimming Federation, known as FINA.

Husain Al Musallam not only achieved his personal aspirations but also aimed to demonstrate that organizers from Asia possess unparalleled talent and foresight. His election as the President of the World Aquatic Federation was no easy feat, yet he succeeded in convincing the global community that he could spearhead the worldwide development of swimming as FINA’s President.

In June 2021, he assumed the presidency of FINA, a testament to the recognition of his abilities by national federations worldwide. What makes this journey even more remarkable is that, as the President of the World Aquatic Federation, Husain Al Musallam did not turn his back on Asia. On the contrary, he has a strong desire to establish Asia as a credible force in sports. This determination has led him to run for the presidency of the Asian Olympic Council (OCA).

Husain Al Musallam’s involvement with the OCA began when he served as the Deputy Director General. He actively cultivated international relations for the OCA over the years, ultimately becoming Technical Director in 1998. His commitment to the organization led to his appointment to the OCA Executive Board in 2003. He has been the Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia since 2005, and he is currently running for president in 2023.

Husain Al Musallam is anticipated to be chosen as the new President of the Olympic Council of Asia following the prestigious election, which is scheduled for July 8 in Bangkok. With a capable captain at the helm, his appointment will herald the start of a new era in Asian sports development. In the OCA General Assembly, our captain will guide us smoothly towards a new destination for Asian sports, filled with limitless possibilities.
