ABIDJAN: General Brice Oligui Nguema, Gabon’s transitional president following last August’s coup, visited Ivory Coast seeking support from President Alassane Ouattara to lift African Union (AU) sanctions imposed on Gabon.

The suspension occurred after Nguema’s overthrow of President Ali Bongo, whose family had ruled Gabon for 55 years. Nguema emphasized his commitment to returning Gabon to civilian rule after a two-year transitional period.

Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) reinstated Gabon in March, signaling regional re-engagement. Nguema’s visit coincided with Gabon’s national dialogue to pave the way for 2025 elections, showcasing a commitment to democratic processes.

During their meeting, Nguema briefed Ouattara on Gabon’s dialogue progress and expressed gratitude for Ivory Coast’s support in the transition process. Ouattara commended Nguema’s efforts toward constitutional normality and the inclusive national dialogue in Gabon.

The request for sanctions relief reflects Gabon’s diplomatic maneuvers to restore international standing. The meeting underscores regional solidarity and support for Gabon’s transition.
