LUANDA: Pakistan’s lawmaker Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, passionately spoke regarding the urgent need to take action for peace and justice, especially in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 and highlighted the pressing situation in Gaza and Palestine.

He expressed these remarks during General Assembly Debate at the 147th IPU Assembly in Luanda, Angola. The Senator stressed that the pursuit of peace and justice is not just an imperative for the world but for all of humanity.

He made an emotional reference to historical events, particularly the Sa’aqar Shatila massacre in Lebanon in 1982, and the current conflict in Gaza, marked by state terrorism and violence. He highlighted that silence in the face of such slaughters amounts to complicity. He provided chilling statistics regarding recent attacks, such as the bombing of nineteen hospitals and the tragic loss of more than 2,000 children and more than 4,000 women’s lives. These sad events, Sayed noted, are unfolding in the 21st century, and the international community must respond.

He also raised concerns regarding the position of some countries on the issue, notably the US, and their opposition to a ceasefire, which, in his opinion, prolongs the current humanitarian crisis.

He lauded the UN Chief Antonio Guterres, for admitting that the Palestinian resistance is rooted in the context of 56 years of unlawful Israeli occupation, highlighting that these events do not occur in isolation.
