Gilgit Baltistan Culture Showcased at Lok Mela

ISLAMABAD: Artisans from Gilgit Baltistan presented the vibrant colours of their art and culture by performing folk dances and music at the 10 days long Lok Mela at Lokvirsa here on Wednesday.

Besides other regions of the country, Gilgit Baltistan is also participating in the Lok Mela with a contingent of over 35 persons, including master artisans, folk artists, folk musicians, and officials.

Sultana Iqbal 45 a renowned woman artisan from Hunza, has also set up a stall of handmade products made with cross-stitched embroidery. She learned the art of typical and distinguished cross-stitch embroidery from her mother at the age of ten. The sophisticated and complex traditional embroidery in Pakistan contributes to the rich culture of the northern part of Pakistan specially Hunza Valley.

She was of the opinion, “I not only want to keep this art alive but also want to transfer it to scores of girls in the region.” She has been participating in various festivals of Artisans-at-work arranged from time to time by various organizations in Pakistan and abroad. Thus, she became the symbol for the preservation and continuation of the most valuable examples of Pakistani heritage.

 In recognition of her services, Sultana Iqbal was granted President’s Medal for Pride of Performance by the government on the recommendations of Lok Virsa.

Culture of Gilgit Baltistan region

 This region is known as a hub for cultural entities, ethnic groups, and various backgrounds. This multitude of cultures is because of the strategic location of Gilgit. In view of the multi-cultural and multi-lingual aspects, people also have a beautiful mix of lifestyles and attitudes presenting a pluralistic society living together with peace and harmony for centuries. The region harbors diverse and endangered mountain cultural traditions. Historically these areas have been aloof from the rest of the world and their life has been revolving around livestock and agriculture.

A cultural evening to focus on Gilgit-Baltistan indigenous folk culture was also held on their specific day. Raja Nasir Ali Khan, Minister for Culture and Tourism, GB will be the chief guest. Outstanding folk artists and musicians will perform during the night representing a true reflection of the diverse culture and musical heritage of Gilgit-Baltistan. The 10-day Lok Mela will continue with all its festivities at Lok Virsa Complex, Shakarparian till Sunday, 4th December
