CALIFORNIA: Google Chrome is set to introduce “real-time phishing protection”, a new feature to its ‘Safe Browsing’ technology.

The new feature is designed to safeguard users from harmful websites while they browse the internet. Reports indicate that Google’s “Safe Browsing” technology has effectively shielded billions of devices from online threats over the past fifteen years.

Previously, the Google browser would check websites against a list of known dangerous sites stored on the user’s device. However, this method proved inadequate as new harmful sites would emerge and vanish within minutes, making it challenging to keep the list updated. With the introduction of the new feature, Google has integrated real-time checks into its browser’s “Standard Protection” mode.

This new functionality will scrutinize all websites visited by users against a continuously updated list stored on Google’s servers. Consequently, if a website is identified as harmful, Chrome can promptly alert the user. To ensure user privacy and security, Google has stated that its browser will encrypt the website’s address and transmit it through a “special server” before conducting the check.

Google expressed its intention to extend these protections to developers to enhance the safety of their applications. It is reported that this update will potentially block 25% more phishing attempts compared to previous measures.

Additionally, Chrome on iPhones and other Apple devices will receive an update to assist users in selecting stronger passwords. The new Safe Browsing mode is already accessible on computers and iPhones, with availability for Android users anticipated later in March.
