Hostile Agencies Behind Jaranwala Incident: Punjab Police Chief

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General Police Dr Usman Anwar on Monday said that hostile agencies were linked to the Jaranwala incident which involved violent attacks on a number of churches and houses of the Christian community over alleged blasphemy allegations.

On 16 August, a mob vandalized several churches and torched scores of houses in Jaranwala town in district of Faisalabad after clerics made announcements in mosques inciting the crowd to attack the Christian community under blasphemy allegations.

The attack sparked anger on social media and among political and religious figures across the country, who condemned the incident, stating that there was no room for such extreme behaviour.

Arrests After Jaranwala Incident

IG Anwar said during a press conference that the Jaranwala incident has links to hostile agencies. Police arrested three main suspects involved in the attacks, including nearly 180 other people.

He said that the law had become active against the Jaranwala incident, and the Christian community victims are being assisted while the construction of the damaged churches is underway.

The IGP said that Efforts are being made to create a rift between Muslims and Christians. The conspiracy was launched from the Sargodha incident.

Speaking about the Holy Quran desecration incident in Sargodha, he said that the police have arrested 3 suspects involved in the incident.

The official said that police had dismantled the network of people involved in the Holy Quran desecration.
