ISLAMABAD: As Muslims around the world observe the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting from sunrise to sunset, maintaining hydration and energy levels becomes crucial.

Clinical Dietician Sara Abdelghany from Dubai’s Healthbay Clinic has revealed some secrets to overcome dehydration, weakness, and other challenges while fasting during this holy month.

Abdelghany emphasizes the importance of meal planning, recommending faithful to divide their daily calories into two to three meals and snacks. During Iftar, she advises avoiding deep-fried and fatty foods, which may cause discomfort such as tummy aches and bloating. Processed foods high in sodium, like sausages and breaded meats, should also be limited to prevent excessive thirst.

Furthermore, sugary drinks and soda can lead to weight gain and sugar cravings, negating the benefits of fasting. While Ramadan sweets can be enjoyed, moderation is key to preventing weight gain and managing hunger. Abdelghany suggests limiting the consumption of Ramadan sweets to three times a week and sticking to moderate portion sizes.

Additionally, caffeinated beverages such as coffee and soft drinks should be avoided as they are diuretic in nature. Instead, water should be prioritized as the key element during Ramadan. Abdelghany recommends drinking at least 8 to 12 cups of water throughout the day between Iftar and Suhoor to maintain hydration.

To optimize hydration levels, Abdelghany advises including fresh fruits and vegetables in meals, as they contain high water content and potassium. This ensures a steady supply of water to the body for sustained well-being throughout the fasting hours.
