ICC World Cup: Shanto, Shakib Drive Bangladesh to 3-wicket Win Against Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD: A quick and solid 82 runs know on 65 balls from the skipper Shakib Al Hasan, fully assisted by 90 runs inning by Najmul Hossain Shanto, guided Bangladesh to a 3-wicket win against Sri Lanka in the ICC contest being played at Delhi, India on Monday. 

Chasing a target of 280, Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das took an aggressive start; however, both lost their wickets in the first 6.2 overs, with the total score reaching 41. But when Shanto and Shakib came to the crease, they both released the pressure from the batting side and took their side to a secure position. Shanto completed his half-century on 58 balls, including 8 fours. 

In the 25th over, Shakib also managed to complete his 56th ODI half-century. At the stage, Bangladesh were 161 for 2 with a run rate of 6 per over. Both contributed 169 crucial runs in partnership for the team and took their side to a very secure position. However, in the 32nd and 34th over, Matthew’s double strike took back Sri Lanka in the game. Shakib smashed a superb 82-run knock on 65 balls. His innings included 2 sixes and 12 fours.

Najmul Hossain Shanto scored a terrific 90 runs inning on 101 balls. After the dismissals of the two set batters, Bangladesh were 211 for 4 in 33.2 overs. The two batters were replaced by Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. However, Sri Lanka managed to get rid of both batters in a couple of overs. Mahmudullah scored 22, while Mushfiq added just 10 runs to the total. 

In the 41st over, when the score reached 269, Bangladesh lost their 7th wicket when Theekshana removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 3. At the stage, the contest became a little bit interesting as Bangladesh were required 11 runs but only 3 wickets in hand. 

Despite losing quick wickets, Bangladesh managed to reach the target due to the splendid innings of Shakib and Shanto in the middle. Bangladesh won the match by 3 wickets with 53 balls to spare.

From Sri Lanka Dilshan Madushanka got 3 wickets. Angelo Mathews and Theekshana took 2 wickets each.

Sri Lanka Batting Against Bangladesh

Earlier, after winning the toss, Bangladesh invited Sri Lanka to bat first on a batting paradise. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket quickly when Mushfiqur Rahim took a stunning catch of Kusal Perera while diving towards the first slip on 4 runs. He was replaced by the skipper Mendis who along with Nissanka, took the inning to 66 for 1 in the 12th over. However, Mendis was dismissed by Shakib on 19. 

In the next over, Tanzim Hasan also removed the other set batter, Nissanka on 41. Meanwhile, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka managed to spend time on the crease and added crucial 63 runs in partnership for the side. In the 25th over, when the score reached 135, Shakib got the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama on 41.

History’s First Batsman Timed Out

Meanwhile, the game witnessed a dramatic turn when Angelo Mathews came to the crease. After coming to the ground, Methews found his helmet strap had some issues. He requested the umpire for extra time to replace his helmet. The replacement was made but not before the 3 minutes. As a result, he was dismissed as timed-out. The incident raised eyebrows and received some positive and negative responses from cricket experts on social media. 

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Asalanka continued to build his inning and completed his half-century. He was accompanied by the number seven batter, Dhananjaya de Silva who added 34 runs to the total before he got out Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Both batters shared 88 runs partnership for the team. At the stage, Sri Lanka were 213 for 6 in 38 overs. Despite dismissals with interval, Asalanka remained solid and took his inning ahead. When he reached 91, Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Maheesh Theekshana who scored 22 on 31 balls. 

Meanwhile, Asalanka completed his terrific hundred on 101 balls to take his side to a decent total. His century inning included 4 sixes and 6 boundaries. He was dismissed by Tanzim Hasan on 108 in the 49th over. Tanzim managed to get another wicket on the last ball of his over. Sri Lanka managed to score 279 all out in 49.3 overs.

From Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib took 3 wickets. Shakib Al Hasan and Shoriful Islam got two wickets each, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz grabbed one wicket.
