India: 2 Killed, Scores Wounded After Police Open Fire in Manipur

NEW DELHI: At least two people were killed and numerous others wounded in India’s violence hit region of Manipur following riots and clashes in the Churachandpur district late on Thursday, as unrest persists in the region, western and local media reported.

A police official said about two hundred fatalities have been recorded since intense conflicts started last May between the predominant Meitei community and the minority Kuki group. These clashes have been primarily driven by disputes over the distribution of tribal quotas and economic benefits. As a result, thousands remain displaced, seeking refuge in relief camps.

Recent episode of violence in Manipur

There is complete unrest in the region and as per the media reports, the recent clashes took place when police opened fire on people in the area. This promoted many people to attack the complex housing the offices of the police chief and the district administration, situated in the town center. The mob breached the gates and scaled the walls of the complex. Several vehicles were torched, and later in the night, the deputy commissioner’s official residence was also set on fire, a senior police official said. Initially, security forces attempted to disperse the mob using tear gas. Subsequently, the situation worsened, leading to the use of lethal force.

Around twenty-five individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at local hospitals. In response to the intensifying tensions, authorities have imposed a 5-day suspension of mobile internet services in the area.
