KATHMANDU: Nepali Police apprehended an Indian national, identified as 22-year-old Mohammad Saiyad alias Chhotu from the Indian state of Bihar, for possession of a substantial quantity of counterfeit Nepali currency notes.

Superintendent of Police Bipin Regmi, stationed at Sunsari District Police Office, disclosed that Saiyad was arrested on Sunday morning near Sunsari river bridge in Inaruwa Municipality-4. He was found in possession of fake Nepali currency notes amounting to Rs18.2 million, all in the denomination of 1,000.

The arrest took place during a routine security check when Saiyad, traveling in a jeep bearing an Indian registration number, attempted to cross into Nepal through the Bhantabari border point. Authorities detained him upon suspicion, leading to the discovery of the counterfeit notes concealed in his vehicle.

Regmi informed that the Indian national had a valid travel permit for his journey to Nepal, which was set to expire on Monday. Following his apprehension, Saiyad has been placed under six-day judicial custody, as investigations into the matter continue.
