JAKARTA: At least 9 people have been killed and fourteen injured in rioting and clashes with police in Papua’s Wamena town after rumors circulated that a child was kidnapped, official and local media reported on Friday

After the clashes, the authorities took measures and increased the security in the area. More than 200 security personnel, including police and the military, have been deployed to control the law and order situation in the restive province of Indonesia.

Local police spokesperson Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo said that no violence reported in the area since Thursday’s clashes.

Rumor Disturbs Security Situation

The clashes took place when rumors were circulating that a kid was abducted in the area. The spokesperson confirmed that an accused has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a child.

As tension flared, police summoned the parents of the kid to clarify to them that their child was totally safe and sound. However, they failed to reduce public anger and more buildings were set ablaze in the city.
