ISLAMABAD: The Indonesian Ambassador to Pakistan Adam M. Tugio on Thursday said that students, researchers, and policymakers could draw invaluable lessons from Indonesia’s story of resilience.

The Indonesian Ambassador was addressing the closing ceremony of an online internship program jointly organized by the Indonesian Embassy and Bahria University, Islamabad, focused on the theme of “Contemporary Dynamics of Indonesia.”

The Online Internship Program (OIP) spanned an impressive seven weeks, featuring fourteen enlightening sessions aimed at fostering a better understanding of modern Indonesia. Eminent speakers from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leading think tanks, and universities were invited to share their insights on various subthemes of mutual interest, highlighting the challenges, achievements, and transformations within Indonesian society. Key topics included Indonesia’s role within ASEAN, its growing economic integration in the region, and its emergence as a Middle Power.

He said that Indonesia, known as the world’s largest archipelagic state, boasting over 17,000 islands and a diverse population of 270 million people from more than 700 ethnic groups, has faced numerous socio-economic and political challenges since gaining independence in 1945. However, the Ambassador underscored Indonesia’s remarkable journey of perseverance and resilience in overcoming these challenges.

Adam Tugio said that Indonesia, once beset by multiple crises, has risen to become the world’s third-largest democracy, an upper-middle-income country, and a member of the G20. It ranks 16th in the world by nominal GDP and 7th in terms of GDP (PPP), all while upholding values of freedom, pluralism, and tolerance.

Over the past few decades, Indonesia has made significant progress and undergone substantial political, diplomatic, and economic transformations. The Ambassador highlighted Pancasila, the pluralist State Ideology, as a pivotal factor behind Indonesia’s success. This ideology embraces religious, social, and political pluralism, fostering a pluralist democracy where Islam, democracy, and modernity coexist harmoniously.

Highlighting the shared historical, religious, and cultural linkages between Indonesia and Pakistan, Adam Tugio stressed the importance of furthering efforts to deepen bilateral relations. The Online Internship Program, he noted, has played a pivotal role in emphasizing the crucial role that academia and the intelligentsia can play in strengthening the ties between the two countries.
