NEW YORK: Instagram has announced updates to its ranking systems aimed at amplifying content from smaller, original creators. The platform’s goal is to foster a more inclusive environment and provide equal opportunities for creators to showcase their work.

The decision to implement these changes comes after Instagram faced criticism from creators who felt overshadowed by the platform’s algorithm. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has been vocal about addressing these concerns and has made it a priority to improve the creator experience on the platform.

With the new updates, smaller creators can expect to receive increased distribution, with a focus on original content over reposts in recommendations. Additionally, reposted content will now feature labels linking back to the original creator, ensuring proper attribution and recognition.

Content aggregators, which often repost content from other creators without adding original value, will no longer be prioritized in recommendations. Instead, Instagram’s revamped recommendation algorithm will give preference to content that engages audiences organically.

To further support original creators, identical content will be replaced by the original version in recommendations, except in cases where significant alterations, such as memes or parodies, have been made.

Furthermore, Instagram is taking steps to address the proliferation of meme accounts and pages that solely repost others’ content. These accounts will soon be excluded from recommendations, signaling a crackdown on content aggregation and a renewed focus on promoting authentic, original content.
