ISLAMABAD: The caretaker government has elevated the status of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to “Division” rank, granting its director general (DG) additional responsibilities.

The decision, approved by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, enables the IB head to assume the role of division secretary, allowing participation in cabinet meetings as an ex-officio member.

While some view this as a hasty decision better suited for an elected government, others see it as facilitating intelligence sharing and cabinet briefings.

Despite concerns, operations and fund handling within the IB are expected to continue unchanged, with audit requirements for its funds now being debated.
