ISLAMABAD: On International Firefighters Day, countries worldwide, including Pakistan, unite to pay tribute to the valour and sacrifices of firefighters who courageously risk their lives to protect communities during emergencies.

Established in 1999 after a tragic incident in Australia, where five firefighters lost their lives battling a sudden wildfire, this day serves as a solemn reminder of the inherent dangers faced by firefighters on duty.

Celebrated for their unmatched dedication, firefighters are esteemed globally for their unique and hazardous profession. Their responsibilities go beyond firefighting; they undertake complex rescue missions requiring specialised skills and equipment, often in unpredictable and perilous conditions.

In Punjab, the introduction of the Rescue 1122 Service in 2004 marked a significant advancement in emergency response capabilities. However, the journey toward establishing a robust fire service faced challenges, ultimately leading to the formation of the Fire Rescue Service in 2007.

Despite their selfless service, firefighters in Karachi have encountered dire circumstances, with at least 33 lives lost and many others disabled while safeguarding lives and property. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), grappling with financial limitations, has struggled to provide essential resources and facilities to its fire brigade.

In acknowledgement of their unwavering dedication, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has vowed to recognize firefighters with the Pride of Performance award, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the safety and welfare of the city’s residents.

As the world observes International Firefighters Day, it also highlights the urgent need to address the challenges faced by these often overlooked heroes.    —APP
