TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have levied serious accusations against Johan Floderus, a Swedish diplomat working for the European Union, who has been held in Tehran’s Evin prison. The judiciary’s Mizan Online news agency reported on Sunday that Floderus is accused of conspiring with Iran’s arch-enemy Israel to undermine the Islamic Republic’s security.

Floderus is alleged to have engaged in extensive measures against Iran’s security, collaborated extensively with Israel, and committed the offense of “corruption on earth,” one of Iran’s most severe charges that carries the maximum penalty of death.

Swedish EU Diplomat Accused of Working Against Iran

The prosecution, as quoted by Mizan, claims that Floderus has been actively working against the Islamic Republic by gathering information for the benefit of the Zionist regime through subversive projects.

The 33-year-old diplomat, employed by the European Union diplomatic service, was arrested on April 17, 2022, at Tehran airport upon his return from a trip abroad. He has since been held in Tehran’s Evin prison.

In response to the situation, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, called for the immediate release of Johan Floderus, asserting that “there are absolutely no grounds for keeping Johan Floderus in detention.”
