TEHRAN: Iran criticized the recent police crackdown in the United States targeting university students protesting against the escalating death toll due to the ongoing Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani stated that the American government has disregarded its human rights obligations and the democratic principles it claims to uphold.

Tehran firmly opposes the use of violent police and military tactics to suppress academic freedom and student demands.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have sparked clashes with law enforcement on American campuses, resulting in the arrest of approximately 275 students over the weekend.

Originating at Columbia University in New York, these protests have proliferated throughout the country.

In solidarity with these demonstrations, hundreds rallied in Tehran and other Iranian cities on Sunday. Some participants displayed banners with slogans such as “Death to Israel” and “Gazans are truly oppressed,” as reported by state media.
