TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Tuesday the successful launch of long-range ballistic missiles from a warship for the first time, marking a significant strength in the country’s military capabilities.
During naval exercises, the IRGC conducted the launch from the Shahid Mahdavi, involving the firing of two ballistic missiles capable of reaching targets up to 1,700 kilometres (1,050 miles) away, Iran’s state television reported.
“The IRGC for the first time has fired ballistic missiles,” the state television report stated.
Iran Bolsters Naval Capabilities
IRGC chief Hossein Salami confirmed the successful firing of a long-range ballistic missile from the warship, indicating Iran’s advancement in naval weaponry.

Additionally, state television reported that in central Iran, the IRGC simulated a surface-to-surface ballistic missile attack on Israel’s Palmachim airbase, located south of Tel Aviv. Palmachim is identified as a key base for F-35 fighter jets in Israel.
These military exercises by Iran come amidst heightened regional tensions following the Israel-Hamas war outbreak on October 7. Iran, known for its non-recognition of Israel, has historically supported the Palestinian cause and operations against Israel.
Western governments have repeatedly expressed concerns over Iran’s missile program, viewing it as a destabilizing factor in the region.
