Iranian Activist Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in Absentia

OSLO: Iranian activist Nargess Mohammadi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in absentia at a ceremony in the Norwegian capital Oslo, Western media reported on Sunday.

Family of Mohammadi, who is on hunger strike in prison in Iran, accepted the award on her behalf.

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony was held on the Human Rights Day. The Nobel Committee, on October 6, announced the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 for Nargess Mohammadi because of her efforts for human rights and freedom for all.

The prize was received by the husband of the imprisoned human rights activist, Taqi Rahmani, and their children, Kiana and Ali.

Her daughter while interacting with media before the ceremony stated that her mother, who is currently in prison, should have been present at the award ceremony.

She stressed that the Nobel Peace Prize is not only for her mother but also for all Iranian women.

Narges Mohammadi, born in 1972 in Zanjan, has a degree in applied physics. She started civil and political activities while she was in the university. She has received several international awards over the years, including the International Press Freedom Award in 2016, and the Alexander Langer Award in 2009.
