DOHA:  Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi has said that Israel is making attempt to empty Gaza of Palestinians in a drive that amounts to genocide, Arab media reported on Sunday. He expressed these remarks while speaking at Doha Forum in Qatar. The Minister said that what they are observing in the Gaza Strip is not simply the killing of innocent people of Palestine and the destruction of their livelihoods, but a systematic attempt to empty the Gaza Strip of its people.

The remarks come as the US vetoed on Friday a UNSC demand for urgent humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. Washington exercising its veto dashes a rising appeal for an immediate truce that had been led by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and regional countries.

As a permanent UNSC member, the US vetoed resolution, while the UK, also a member, abstained on the vote on resolution.

Earlier, several attempts to adopt a resolution calling for a permanent truce were vetoed. The UN said around 80 percent of the population of Gaza has been displaced, facing shortages of fuel, food, medicine, and water along with the threat of disease.

Similarly, the UNGA in October approved a resolution — 121 votes in support, 14 against and 44 abstentions — asking for “an immediate, long term and sustained humanitarian ceasefire leading to a cessation of hostilities.”
