ROME: Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, emphasized the importance of a clear and united European strategy against Russia in light of its war in Ukraine, urging Europe to avoid contradictory actions and controversial statements.

In an interview with la Repubblica, Crosetto stressed the need for Europe to present a cohesive front, rather than splintering into smaller groups, to effectively counter Russia’s actions. He criticized recent meetings, like the one between Germany, France, and Poland, suggesting that such divisions within the European coalition supporting Ukraine are impractical.

Italy has committed to providing Ukraine with materials and equipment, including weapons, until 2024, as part of a defense pact signed in February. Crosetto highlighted the importance of making decisions regarding arms purchases for Kyiv at EU and NATO-level meetings.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced after the meeting that Ukraine’s supporters would utilize frozen Russian assets to finance arms acquisitions for Kyiv. However, Crosetto argued that such decisions should be made collectively.

Echoing Crosetto’s sentiments, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani ruled out the possibility of Italian troops being deployed to Ukraine, emphasizing that Italy’s objective is to achieve peace rather than escalate the conflict.
