ISTANBUL: The country’s weather agency has claimed that Japan’s average temperature in summer this year was the highest since records started 125 years ago.

The summer of 2023 in Japan has been characterized as “abnormal” by Japanese scientists. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the average temperature from June to August was 1.76 degrees Celsius, higher than the 30-year average. This deviation was even more significant in northern Japan, with temperatures being three degrees higher than usual.

On August 10th, in the city of Itoigawa, located in the Niigata prefecture on Japan’s western coast, the country experienced its hottest night ever, with the temperature not dropping below 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.52 degrees Fahrenheit).

NHK reported that nighttime record highs were recorded in 248 locations across the country. Additionally, sea surface temperatures around Japan increased by one degree higher than the average, marking the warmest readings since records began in 1982. —AA/APP
