ISLAMABAD: Jordan defeated Pakistan 3-0 in the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier at Jinnah Sports Ground in Islamabad on Thursday.

From the start, Jordan asserted their dominance, swiftly taking the lead with a goal just two minutes into the game. Musa Al-Tamari proved to be a formidable force for the Jordanian team, scoring two goals in the opening ten minutes and ultimately earning the title of man of the match.

Despite the valiant efforts of the Pakistani team, characterized by goalkeeper Yousuf Ijaz Butt’s exceptional performance, including several remarkable saves and even stopping a penalty, they struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The defeat marks Pakistan’s third consecutive loss in Group G of the Asian qualifiers, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the points table.

However, Pakistan still holds hope for redemption as they prepare to face Jordan once again in the upcoming away fixture on March 26th. This crucial match presents a final opportunity for Pakistan to revitalize their qualification prospects for the World Cup.

Notably, this encounter between Pakistan and Jordan marks only the second meeting between the two nations in football history. Their previous encounter, a friendly match in 2006, also saw Jordan emerge victorious with a 3-0 scoreline.

In light of the match, attention also turned to the composition of the Pakistan football squad, with players like Imran Kayani drawing significant interest. Kayani, who has harbored dreams of playing football at the highest level since childhood, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Pakistan internationally while pursuing his education.

Pakistan men’s football team coach Stephen Constantine acknowledged last week Jordan was one of the best sides in Asia but vowed Pakistan would not “lay down” in front of their opponents. “We have very little time to prepare for such a big game,” he said.

“And unfortunately, we are going to play one of the best teams [Jordan] in Asia on 21st March.” “We will fight against Jordan and not lay down,” he added.
