Kazakhstan Prioritizes Energy Sector as Pillar of Economy, Aims for Full Decarbonization by 2060

ASTANA: Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasized the significance of the energy sector as a major pillar of Kazakhstan’s economy. Acknowledging the country’s abundant energy resources, Tokayev asserted that Kazakhstan does not intend to relinquish this vital economic development avenue. Instead, the nation is poised to intensify its focus on the development of the energy sector.

In an interview with Euronews TV, President Tokayev underlined the country’s commitment to transitioning towards a non-carbon future. He expressed optimism about Kazakhstan’s journey toward full decarbonization by the end of 2060, acknowledging the transformative challenge ahead.

Tokayev emphasized the need for a significant mindset shift and recognized the global trend towards sustainable economic development.

Kazakhstan’s Rich Energy Resources

Kazakhstan, endowed with rich energy resources, not only caters to its domestic market but also exports energy resources globally. In 2022, the country produced 84.2 million tons of oil, with 64.3 million tons earmarked for export. Additionally, Kazakhstan exported 4.6 billion cubic meters of gas during the same period.

While Kazakhstan presently relies on coal in its energy balance, President Tokayev assured that the nation is actively working towards positive changes in the near future. He highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving global landscape and expressed the country’s dedication to environmental protection.
