ASTANA: Deputies of Kazakhstan’s Majilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament, have approved a draft law regarding the ratification of amendments to the Treaty between Kazakhstan and Lithuania on mutual legal assistance in criminal and civil matters, Kazinform News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Following the endorsement by the lower chamber, the draft law has been forwarded to the upper chamber of the Kazakh Parliament. The original treaty, ratified on November 9, 1998, outlines the procedures and conditions for mutual legal assistance between the two nations in civil, family, and criminal matters.

According to the treaty’s provisions, the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor’s General Office are the primary points of contact for matters outlined in the draft law. The protocol introducing amendments to the treaty was signed in August 2022.

The ratification of this protocol is expected to enhance further bilateral cooperation in providing legal assistance in civil and criminal matters, thereby contributing to the protection of the rights of Kazakhstan and Lithuanian citizens.
