Leader in Plot to Abduct US Governor Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison

WASHINGTON: The US Justice Department announced on Tuesday that one of the two leaders of a far-right US militia group that plotted to kidnap and kill Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was sentenced to 16-year in prison.

According to Reuters, Adam Fox, was convicted alongside Barry Croft in August for conspiracy in planning the governor’s kidnapping and preparing to use weapons of mass destruction in the 2020 plot.

Adam Fox and several others in the group, including an FBI informant, planned the assault on the governor in part as a response to her Covid-19 policies but also, they said to start a civil war.

According to the US Justice Department, the plot involved kidnapping Governor Gretchen Whitmer from her vacation cabin, in Michigan, and using improvised bombs targeting security personnel to help in their escape.

Adam Fox faced a possible life sentence but was given 16-year in prison. Barry Croft will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen in a statement said that today’s decision reflects the Department of Justice’s firm pledge to protecting their elected officials, officers, and dedicated public servants from violence and criminal threats.

The judgment came 12 days after 3 others who took part in the plot received sentences ranging from seven to 12-year for their part in a Michigan state court.
