TRIPOLI: The residence of Prime Minister of Libya Abdulhamid Al-Dbeibah was targeted with rocket-propelled grenades on Sunday, however, there were no casualties, said a Libyan minister.

The minister, while speaking to media in condition of anonymity, confirmed that the attack only caused some damage, however, he did not provide any further details.

Two citizens said they had heard loud explosions in Tripoli’s luxury Hay Andalus neighborhood, which is home to PM Dbeibah’s residence.

A citizen said that after the explosions, heavy security contingents were deployed around the area.

Libya has been witnessing an unrest since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising, and division in 2014 between eastern and western factions, with rival administrations governing each area.

Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity was formed through UN-backed process in 2021 but the parliament, in the east, did not recognize its legitimacy. The north African country is currently facing a prolonged political deadlock.

Early of March, three key leaders of Libya announced to form a new unified government that would supervise long-delayed polls.

Dbeibah has said he will not hand over power to a new government without national elections.
