LOS ANGELES: The death of Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of iconic musician Elvis Presley, has been attributed to a bowel obstruction related to a previous weight loss surgery, according to medical examiners.

The 54-year-old singer-songwriter, who lived a complex life in the shadow of her famous father, was discovered unresponsive in her home in January and rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner revealed that Presley’s cause of death was “a small bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue that developed after a previous bariatric surgery years ago.” Bariatric surgery is a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and is often performed to assist with weight loss.

Presley’s ex-husband, Danny Keough, found her in their Calabasas residence and initiated CPR until paramedics arrived. She was then placed in an induced coma on life support but ultimately succumbed to her condition. Throughout her life, Presley had been married to notable figures such as Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson, and actor-composer Michael Lockwood.

As the only child of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie previously held control over Elvis Presley Enterprises but sold most of her shares to a private equity firm in 2005. However, she retained ownership of Graceland, her father’s estate, where he was discovered unconscious in 1977. A settlement was reached between Lisa Marie’s mother, Priscilla Presley, and herself in May after a dispute concerning an amendment that excluded Priscilla from her daughter’s will.

Lisa Marie Presley is survived by her mother, daughter Riley Keough, and teenage twin daughters Harper and Finley. Tragically, her son Benjamin Keough died by suicide in 2020. The news of her death and its link to her prior weight loss surgery has brought attention to the potential risks associated with such procedures.
