LONDON: British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has asked Israel not to retaliate after Iran’s strike.

The attack by over 300 missiles and drones from Iranian side caused only modest damage in Israel, AFP reported. The strike followed an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s embassy building in Damascus, Syria on April 1.

Cameron told BBC, that he thought they perfectly justified to think they should reply as they have been attacked, but we are asking them as friends not to retaliate. The UK top diplomat said that he was asking Israel not to escalate the tensions in the region.

Iran on Saturday launched a strike at Israel in retaliation against an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria which killed around seven revolutionary guards, including two commanders. Tehran had warned that Israel would be “punished” for the attack.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country would help do everything to avert a “conflagration” in the Middle East following an unprecedented Iranian strike on Israel.

In an interview with a television, President Macron said that they would take every step to avert crisis in the region. Responding to a question, the French President said that French jets assisted repel an Iranian violation of Jordan’s air space during the strike late Saturday.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran said that Tehran has no intention of engaging militarily with Washington in the region, but if the US initiates a military operation against Iran, “Tehran will use its inherent right to reply proportionately.”

Iran and Israel have blamed one another at the UN of being the main threat to the regional peace, each calling on the UNSC to impose sanctions on their enemy, western media reported. Iran’s permanent representative to the UN Amir Saeid Iravani told the UNSC meeting that Saturday’s strike on Israel was “precise, only attacked military objectives.

On the other side, Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan told the UNSC that Iran has exposed its true face as the destabilizer of the world and the region. He asked the UNSC to impose sanction on Tehran.
