LONDON: London Mayor Sadiq Khan has accused Reform UK MP Lee Anderson of perpetuating “Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred,” stating that such rhetoric is fueling hate crimes and violent threats in the city.

Sadiq Khan’s remarks come in response to a secret recording released by ITV News, in which Anderson is heard making disparaging comments about Khan at an event with party members. Anderson alleged that Khan “hates this country… our heritage, our culture.”

This revelation comes amidst further controversy surrounding the London mayoral elections, with Conservative candidate Susan Hall facing scrutiny for her social media activity. It has been reported that Hall followed pages and groups on social media where people posted racist content and abuse directed at Mayor Khan.

Anderson, who previously held the position of deputy chair within the Conservative Party, switched parties after being suspended by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for accusing Khan of being under the influence of “Islamists” and of relinquishing control of London to his associates.

In the recorded conversation, Anderson claimed to have received support from former Conservative colleagues, including senior party officials, who allegedly expressed sympathy for his remarks. While not naming individuals, Anderson asserted that he would not betray the confidence of his colleagues, regardless of their political affiliation.

Mayor Khan condemned Anderson’s comments, stating, “It is deeply depressing that he confirms his Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred was cheered on by current Tory party staff, MPs, and Cabinet ministers.” Khan emphasized the detrimental impact of such rhetoric on society, asserting that it undermines the unity of modern, diverse Britain and contributes to the escalation of hate crimes and violent threats.
