ISLAMABAD: Merely a day before the change of command at the General Headquarters, Bahawalpur corps commander and the former Inter-Service Intelligence Director-General Lt-Gen Faiz Hamid has opted for early retirement and verbally intimated the army’s high command.
Sources said that Lt-Gen Faiz Hamid’s resignation has been accepted. Lt-Gen Hamid was among the six contenders for the army chief’s slot. His name was also included for the slot of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif appointed Gen Asim Munir as the new army chief, who was number one on the list of senior lieutenant generals. Lt-Gen Sahir Shamshad, who was in second place, was appointed as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
