WASHINGTON: Rapper Macklemore released a new song titled “Hind’s Hall” showing solidarity with Gaza and inspired by pro-Palestinian protests across the United States (US) universities.

The song premiered on Macklemore’s official YouTube channel, which has nearly 10 million subscribers, and within the first four hours, it garnered over 60,000 views.

The song pays tribute to Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl tragically killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. Macklemore pledged to donate all proceeds from the song’s sales to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Addressing various critical issues, the song touches upon US involvement in Israeli actions in Gaza, law enforcement’s response to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campuses, and the suppression of pro-Palestinian content on social media platforms.

Throughout the composition, the rapper critiques the US government while consistently expressing support for Palestinian freedom. He also advocates for a nuanced understanding of the conflict, distinguishing between criticism of Israeli policies and anti-Semitism. Macklemore condemns Israel’s actions as genocidal and highlights the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Additionally, he questions the music industry’s priorities, urging fellow artists to use their platforms to address injustices in Palestine.

This isn’t Macklemore’s first foray into activism regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict; he has previously spoken at pro-Palestine rallies and called for a ceasefire.

The song’s release coincides with Israel’s ongoing military assault in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 14,500 Palestinian children alone, according to reports from the Gaza Health Ministry. While receiving praise from pro-Palestinian activists for amplifying their voices, the song has also faced criticism from Israel supporters who disagree with its portrayal of the conflict.
