PARIS, France: French President Emmanuel Macron is set to engage Chinese leader Xi Jinping in high-stakes talks during Xi’s state visit to France, aimed at addressing the escalating conflict over Ukraine while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.

Xi’s visit, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between France and China, underscores Macron’s role as a pivotal EU powerbroker amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The talks, slated to begin on Monday, will also involve EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting the significance of the discussions on a broader European scale.

While Xi emphasizes China’s commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, Macron is expected to caution against any support for Russia, particularly in arms supply, which could exacerbate the crisis. Western concerns over Chinese assistance to Moscow’s military capabilities underscore the urgency of Macron’s warnings.

In addition to addressing the Ukraine conflict, Macron aims to assert Europe’s strategic interests in its economic dealings with China, urging Beijing to adhere to international trade rules. Despite divergent views within Europe on engagement with China, Macron remains steadfast in advocating for a unified European stance.

However, challenges persist in leveraging Macron’s influence over Xi, as the Chinese leader’s itinerary also includes visits to Serbia and Hungary, both regarded as Moscow-friendly nations in Europe. Analysts express skepticism regarding Macron’s ability to sway Xi’s stance, highlighting China’s perceived confidence in its current position.

Human rights concerns, are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions. Rights groups urge Macron to address China’s human rights violations, emphasizing the need for consequences in France-China relations.

Despite the ceremonial welcome and picturesque mountain rendezvous planned for Tuesday, Macron faces an uphill battle in influencing Xi’s policies, with the Chinese leader showing little indication of altering course. The outcome of the talks will shape not only France-China relations but also broader dynamics in the ongoing geopolitical landscape.
