MAKKAH, Saudi Arabia: Artifacts, inscriptions and drawings offer insight into the history of city of Makkah as its museums attract Muslims from across the world and enrich the pilgrimage experience.

The museums also offer revealing insights into the Kingdom’s history and its dedication to Hajj and Umrah performers.

Vice chairman of the Saudi Historical Society and professor of graduate studies at Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Fahd Al-Maliki, told Arab News that the emergence of museums in the Arab world was slowed by political, economic, educational, social and religious challenges.

The latter, Al-Maliki added, included some factions viewing the collection of relics and statues as reminiscent of pre-Islamic idol worship. This led to the destruction of such items in many Arab countries, driven by fears of paganism, which hindered the development of museums in the region.
