SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, is set to embark on his first official state visit to Singapore from Monday, May 6, to Tuesday, at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday.

Sultan Ibrahim, who ascended to the throne in January as Malaysia’s 17th king, will be making his inaugural overseas visit since assuming office. Notably, he previously visited Singapore in 2022, albeit in his capacity as the Sultan of Johor.

Accompanying Sultan Ibrahim on the visit will be Queen of Malaysia, Raja Zarith Sofia, along with Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, and other senior officials.

The visit itinerary includes a ceremonial welcome at the Istana on Monday, where Sultan Ibrahim and his wife will be received with traditional honors. President Tharman and his wife will further extend hospitality by hosting a state banquet in their honor.

During his time in Singapore, Sultan Ibrahim will engage in high-level meetings, including discussions with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, separately. This visit holds additional significance as it marks the last major diplomatic engagement with PM Lee before Mr. Wong assumes the role of Prime Minister on May 15.

Sultan Ibrahim will also have the opportunity to tour the parliament chambers and observe parliamentary proceedings. Furthermore, the itinerary includes a visit to the Thomson-East Coast Line, where Sultan Ibrahim will be accompanied by Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Chee Hong Tat.
