GOTHENBURG, Sweden: A massive fire broke out at an amusement park in the western Swedish city of Gothenburg on Monday, engulfing outdoor water slides and related facilities that were under construction, witnesses and emergency services said.

No serious injuries were reported, but police said Monday night that one man was missing.

There were no guests at the Oceana water park, a new addition to Gothenburg’s Liseberg promenade, which was scheduled to open later this year, a park spokesman told Sweden’s TT news agency.

Black smoke billowed over Sweden’s second-largest city after a fire broke out in the construction of a water park at one of the country’s biggest entertainment centers.

The fire spread through several water slides and a hangar-like building. Police and firefighters could not immediately say what caused the fire.

According to the police, 12 people were slightly injured. A nearby hotel was also evacuated.

Oceana was due to open this summer, Swedish news agency TT reported, adding that it cost 1.2 billion crowns ($10.6 million) to build.
