ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: A man was gunned down by Karachi Police in the Gulistan-e-Johar area on Tuesday evening over ‘mistaken identity’.

The slain man, identified as 27-year-old Aamir who got married a year ago, was returning home from his brother’s house with a friend when he was fatally shot by personnel of Shaheen Force, according to media reports.

Police claim that Shaheen Force personnel asked the motorcyclists to stop, but they did not abide by it. Subsequently, they chased the bikers and eventually opened fire. Aamir died on the spot while his friend remained unharmed during the shooting.

Police also claimed that the motorcyclists fired at the police while trying to flee the area, and the personnel responded to this by shooting at them, adding that they also recovered used ammunition from the accused riders.

Police have said that they are looking into the man’s criminal record.

Police shot Aamir despite his pleas to not do so: Witnesses

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that four police personnel gunned down Aamir in front of them, adding that he kept screaming “I am not armed, do not shoot.” The witnesses also questioned the reason for shooting a man over the suspicion of robbery when he was standing with a minor girl.

The mother of the deceased told the media that the policemen had “murdered” her son. She claimed that Amir and his brother worked at the fishery and questioned how could a man rob someone when a girl is with him.

According to the postmortem report, Aamir received two bullets – one in the right leg while the other entering from his waist to the chest that turned out fatal.

Following the incident, Karachi police arrested three shooters named Nasir, Shehriyar and Faisal, and registered an FIR against them.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Inspector General (IG) of Karachi Police.
