ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday endorsed the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) volte-face on the Punjab polls, saying postponing elections was in the country’s interest.

In a statement, Marriyum said the electoral watchdog is obligated to guarantee free, transparent, and impartial polls as per Article 218 of the constitution as she added that it also states that caretaker setups must be in place at both the central and provincial levels during the elections.

Marriyum Aurangzeb also pointed out that under the present situation in the country, any elections held in the two provinces would have been highly controversial. She went on to say that a population census is going on in the country adding it is not possible to hold elections before the completion of the census.

The info minister said that it is not possible to impose elections on two provinces on the whims of a man. The constitution cannot be governed by the will of one man, she concluded.
