Maryam Makes History as Punjab Assembly Elects First Woman Chief Minister

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz has been elected as the first woman Chief Minister of Punjab. She is also the first woman to hold the office of the CM in any of the provinces in Pakistan’s history.

The provincial assembly’s session to elect the CM of Punjab kicked off earlier in the day, with newly appointed Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan presided over the session.

Maryam Nawaz was elected with a huge majority as the opposition parties boycotted the proceedings. With a majority of 186 members needed to be elected as the CM of the province, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) appears in a very comfortable position with the support of 220 lawmakers out of a house of 327.

As per the current composition of the Punjab Assembly, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz holds a significant majority with 224 MPAs, while the Sunni Ittehad Council claims 103 members.

Earlier, Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) walked out of the Punjab Assembly session which was called to elect the chief minister today in protest following the speaker turned down their request to address the session.  The session of the provincial assembly began with over a 30-minute delay and was being presided over by newly-elected Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan.

Maryam Nawaz got elected from two seats of Lahore including PP-159 and NA 119 and she retained the provincial assembly seat.
