ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy came under attack on Sunday night in Dera Ismail Khan district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, local media reported. However, the JUI-F chief remained unhurt in the attack.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy was fired upon from multiple sides at Yarik interchange, the JUI-F’s spokesperson Mufti Abrar said. The JUI-F chief was travelling for an election campaign event when his convoy was attacked, the party spokesman added.

The spokesperson added that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was travelling through DI Khan when his convoy came under attack near the Yarik toll plaza. He added that the JUI-F chief was safe in the attack.

The party spokesman described the attack as ‘cowardly’. He added that the party had repeatedly warned that the atmosphere was not favourable for election campaigning. The spokesman said that the attack needs to be investigated, and there needs to be an explanation.

Meanwhile, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Nasir Mehmood said, as quoted by a local news channel, that the firing took place in close proximity, adding that Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy was not the intended target.

The RPO said that the intended target of the gunfire was, in fact, a police checkpoint.
