TEGUCIGALPA: Security officials of Honduras arrested a mayor on Sunday accused of trafficking large amounts of cocaine to the United States by ship and plane.

He was allegedly working with drug cartels to smuggle 90 tons of cocaine to the United States.

A spokesperson for the Honduran prosecutors’ office Jorge Galindo in a statement said that Mayor Wilmer Manolo Wood of Brus Laguna was taken into custody in the remote Mosquitia region that borders Nicaragua.

He is believed to be working with three cartels: Los Piningos, Los Yanez and Los Amador.

Galindo said that Wood personally received 30 tons of cocaine from each cartel and moved it to Honduras to transport it to the United States.

Authorities say Wood got involved in drug trafficking 15 years ago and started running operations eight years ago.
