LONDON: The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal next week would be a harder challenge for resurgent Mercedes than the past Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, the club’s trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said on Friday.

In Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, Mercedes eliminated 2nd and 3rd while the seven times Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and George Russell receiving the club’s first double podium of the event, local media reported.

Shovlin said that an updated package and the racing track features assisted Mercedes in Spain but now  Montreal was a completely different circuit.

He said that here are more slow-speed areas, a lot of straight-line full speed-breakers and more challenges are expected.

Champions Red Bull has won all 7 games so far in the ongoing season, with championship leader Max Verstappen taking five wins and Mexican colleague Sergio Perez, his closest title challenger with two.

Aston Martin has occupied third place, ahead of Ferrari.

Mercedes is set for more thrilling race

He further said that the club is looking forward to more thrilling racing but the players are surely aware that Canada could to be a tougher challenge than the Sunday they had in Barcelona.

Last year, Verstappen won from the pole in Canada with Hamilton held the third position, behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Russell was 4th.

Hamilton took the first vicory of his Formula 1 career in Canada in 2007 with McLaren and has remained the winner in that race for seven times in total – a record he shares with Michael Schumacher.
