MEXICO: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has recommended a public referendum to determine the future of bullfighting in Mexico City, where the tradition has been suspended since mid-2022 due to legal challenges and pressure from animal rights activists.

The president’s call for a referendum reflects a desire to involve the public in deciding the fate of this deeply rooted cultural practice, balancing tradition with evolving societal attitudes toward animal welfare. The largest bullring globally, Plaza de Toros, awaits the potential resumption of bullfights pending public opinion and further legal proceedings.
