ANKARA: Recent research has revealed that over 4,000 European doctors serving in the United Kingdom (UK) have decided not to continue their work and duties with Britain’s National Health Service (NHS).

This will worsen the situation as the country faces a shortage of doctors after the UK’s exit from the Brexit decision.

Four health specialties

Doctors decided to leave UK’s National Health Services belonging to four health specialties: pediatric, anesthetist, cardiothoracic surgery, and psychiatry, escalating the continued recruitment and retention crisis.

Research published by Nuffield Trust states that the data of major working employees and staff show a toll of high numbers from the European Union EU and the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) before the exclusion from Brexit.

According to the research, in 2021, 37,035 European doctors were working in Britain, and the statistics lowered at the number of 4,285 to the projected number of 41,321 if Brexit did not happen.

Lower stagnation of EU doctors’ numbers

According to the research findings, the lower stagnation in the number of EU doctors in these four medical specialties has escalated the existing shortages in the medical field where the UK’s NHS has not successfully found enough qualified staff elsewhere.

Although deeper wide research into factors of employee migration is needed, the withdrawal decision from BREXIT is the main driving factor for the shortage of doctors and professional staff. – APP/Anadolu Agency
