Motorway Bus Accident Claims Five Lives in Germany

BERLIN: At least five people were killed and around 20 other wounded when a bus overturned on a motorway near Leipzig city in Germany on Wednesday, police said.

The tragic incident took place at A9 motorway in the morning between Wiedemar and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz intersection.

According to Flixbus company the bus was going from Berlin to Zurich with 53 passengers onboard along with two drivers.

Flixbus in a statement said that the exact circumstances of the accident are yet to be known.  It added that the two drivers survived.

The German authorities said that emergency services reached the site of the accident on time and attended the wounded while the motorway was closed in both ways. According to the police there were no indications that any other vehicles were involved in the road accident.

Transport Minister of Germany Volker Wissing expressed his shock over the accident. He told media that his thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those affected, while wishing speedy recovery to the injured.

Another Flixbus bus crashed on the same area of the motorway in May 2019. In that accident one person was killed while 60 others injured, seven of them seriously.
