Thick Fog Causes Closure of Motorway M-1

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast mainly cold and dry weather in most parts of the country. However, foggy conditions will likely develop over a few plain districts of Punjab during morning hours.

As per the synoptic situation, continental air prevails over most parts of the country.


Foggy conditions: –

Motorway M1 is closed at different spots due to dense fog. It has been closed from Peshawar Toll Plaza to Rashakai while Swat Expressway is closed from Karnal Sher Khan to Ismaila for all traffic due to fog on Tuesday.

The motorways given below were closed due to fog in Punjab on Friday,

  1. Muridke to Samrial Motorway
  2. Lahore to Sialkot Motorway and 
  3. The M2 motorway from Lahore to Sheikhupra

It was reopened later for traffic with an improvement in visibility.


Safety tips for Driving in fog: –

  • Motorway Police and National Highways have requested that people avoid unnecessary travel due to foggy weather and use fog lights while travelling on this motorway section.
  • It has been advised to the public to keep a middle distance between vehicles more than in normal conditions in the foggy season and take advisory from helpline 130 before starting the journey.
  • The motorway police have directed the motorcyclists to use rear fog lights. These lights are helpful while driving to avoid accidents.
  • They have advised people to avoid travelling on motorways unnecessarily during fog.
  • Motorway police have warned motorcyclists against fast driving. They have asked them to maintain a proper distance from other vehicles.


Recorded temperatures

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met), a maximum of 11 degrees Celsius (°C) temperature was recorded in Islamabad, 14°C in Lahore, 22°C in Karachi, 9°C in Peshawar, 4°C in Quetta, and -1.5°C in Gilgit. 


Minimum recorded temperatures

Today’s Lowest Minimum Temperatures (°C): Leh -08, Skardu -06, Kalat, Ziarat -04, Ziarat -03, Astore, Gilgit, Hunza -03, Quetta, Srinagar -02, Shopian, Pulwama and Bagrote -01.
