Murad Ali Shah Secures Third Consecutive Term as Sindh Chief Minister

KARACHI: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Syed Murad Ali Shah was elected as the Chief Minister of Sindh for the third consecutive term.

Murad Ali Shah secured a two-thirds majority for the first time in his tenure after bagging 112 votes against MQM-Pakistan’s Ali Khurseedi, who secured only 36 votes. He becomes the 25th leader of the House. A total of 148 assembly members participated in the voting process, while nine PTI-backed members and one from Jamaat-e-Islami boycotted the session.

Speaker Owais Shah presided over the session, which also included the swearing-in ceremony for the chief minister.

Who is Murad Ali Shah?

Born on August 11, 1962, in Karachi, Shah received his education from reputable institutions, including St Patrick’s High School and NED University of Engineering and Technology. He furthered his academic pursuits with dual Master of Science degrees in Civil-Structural Engineering and Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University in California.

With a diverse professional background spanning both public and private sectors across Pakistan, the UK, Kuwait, and the United States, Shah’s career includes stints at notable organizations such as the Hyderabad Development Authority and Citibank.

Transitioning into politics in 2002, Shah swiftly rose through the ranks of the PPP, securing a seat in the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. Following his successful election, he assumed the role of Deputy Leader of the PPP Parliamentary party in the Sindh Assembly.

Over the years, Shah has demonstrated his electoral prowess by winning seats in the provincial assembly in the 2008, 2013, and 2018 elections. During his tenure, he has held key ministerial portfolios, including Revenue, Irrigation, Finance, Energy, and Planning and Development.

In July 2016, Shah ascended to the position of Chief Minister, a role he reclaimed after the 2018 general elections for a second term. Moreover, he holds prominent positions within the PPP, serving as a member of the Central Executive Committee and Vice President of PPP Sindh.
