BRUSSELS: The chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg on Monday said it was not too late for Ukraine to win the war against Russia, adding that Kyiv needs more weapons.

He made the remarks at a time when Russia claimed the capture of two eastern villages in the Donetsk region in 24 hours.

The NATO secretary general at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine has been facing a shortage of weapons for months, but it’s not too late for Ukraine to win.

He said long delays in US military assistance to Ukraine had serious consequences on the war front.

Stoltenberg said the NATO allies are looking hard to meet Ukraine’s urgent requirements.

Ukraine has been dependent on Western military assistance to fight Russia’s larger and more powerful army.

President Zelensky expressing his views on the occasion urged faster deliveries to bolster the front line. He added the Russian army is trying to take advantage of the situation.

He added that promptness in military supply means stabilization of the front line.  He said together they must disrupt the Russian offensive.

Speaking about the aid, Zelensky said some things have started to reach Ukraine but declined to go into details.

US President Joe Biden last week gave final approval for the military aid to Ukraine, that was blocked in Congress for months. He added the shipments will begin right away.

Ukraine on Sunday said the situation was worsening for its troops in the eastern Donetsk region.
